Update

Dear all:

I really, really dislike doing this to you, but after much agonizing following the Governor’s announcement earlier this afternoon (March 23), I decided to cancel the Front Steps Project for now. It is just not worth the health risk, even if that risk is minimal. The Covid-19 situation is expected to get much worse, and I would like to be part of the solution, not the problem.
I am truly very sad. I very much enjoyed photographing eight families yesterday in an effort to bear witness to these trying times and spread some cheer. Going forward I’ve decided it’s better for the entire community to not take any unnecessary risks. I sincerely hope you understand. I can’t wait to come together again when we’re on the other side.

Everything that can possibly be said about the corona virus is being shared on social media and the news, and I don’t have any new knowledge or wisdom to spout. I have been wracking my brain about something positive that I, as a photographer and small business owner, could contribute to my community when I came across a project by a fellow photographer in Needham, Massachusetts, the Front Steps Project.

Inspired by Cara Soulia of Cara Soulia Photography, starting tomorrow, I will offer 5-minute family portrait sessions on your front steps/porch/driveway, whatever. The idea is both to bring us together in this time of isolation and to document the unprecedented weirdness of being cooped up at home indefinitely. Here are the nuts and bolts:

1. At this time, I will limit this to families in zip codes 22101, 22207 and 22205.
2. I will text you when I arrive at your home and I will take photos OUTSIDE only. To honor social distancing, I will maintain a distance of AT LEAST 15 feet (I have long lenses). The session will be very short, about 5 minutes.
3. You understand that this likely will not be my best work, as I have no control over light and setting.
4. You agree to having your photo posted on Facebook and Instagram.
5. You will receive your digital image per email within 24 hours.
6. There is no fee, but you are encouraged to make a donation (maybe $25) to either AFAC or Share of McLean to help the neediest members of our community.
